It smells like…VR!

It smells like…VR!

Virtual Reality aims to trick us about the authenticity of the experience by providing vital clues from the world around us. But what exactly happens when it comes to odor?
Scent of Mystery is a 1960 film, the first to use the Smell-O-Vision system designed to pipe scents individually to each seat at a theater.
A similar mechanism is about to be released later this year: an innovation that combines VR and smell.
This new smell creation device, will be armed with scent-emitting cartridges in five different scented oils that are easy to place and remove. It will be able to emit five to ten popular scents like ‘ocean’ and ‘ice cream’, although the current generation includes five modules with scents such as ‘fish’, and the intriguing  ‘lady’ odor.
Assuming average sniffing of two hours a day, with the fragrance apparently limited to a small area, cartridges can last around a month. The smell cartridge system offers 200 degrees field (almost the full range of a human eye’s peripheral vision) and it is compatible with different headsets. Cartridges could also be emulated with custom requests on demand, as well.
So….are you ready to smell the future?
