Greece’s financial recovery from crisis is supported by many local companies that have identified lucrative business opportunities to new international markets such as South America and the Caribbean.
Our country’s entrepreneurs has collaborated with new trade partners by reaching brand new markets so that they can create a business network outside of Greece. In this way they are becoming more competitive while supporting the nation’s economy.
Greece’s worldwide exports has been rising steadily, with an increase of 13.2% in 2017 (US$32.6 billion), representing the 31.5% of total Greek Gross Domestic Product. The country’s exports are broad-based with products such as petroleum goods, raw materials, chemicals etc., with the sector of “Food and Beverage” representing the most export-oriented and dynamic amongst the others.
This boost took place primarly due to two factors: a. the increased demand from fellow European Union trading partners, and b. the implementation of exporting to new worldwide markets.
With a closer look, the majority of Greece’s exports were delivered to the EU countries (63.6%) while 23.1% went to Asia, 6.2% to African importers and 5% to North America.
On the other hand, Greek exports to non-EU countries rose by 46.9% compared to 2016: many goods were exported in 2017 to new markets such as the Ivory Coast, the British Virgin Islands, Pakistan, Belarus, Trinidad & Tobago, Cape Verde etc. (according to the Panhellenic Exporters Association.) There was also a big demand for Greek products from other countries such as Japan, where the wine exports were up 66% in the previous year.
So, apart from the dynamic sector of tourism, the industry of Greek exports has been undergoing an evolution, re-focusing its efforts on markets abroad.
Finally, Greece will be the honored country at the Summer Fancy Food Show (one of the largest F&B exhibitions in North America), taking place in New York in June 2018…and this means a lot!
