\nA\u00a0trend<\/b>\u00a0which is\u00a0increasingly gaining ground<\/b>\u00a0in the medical and cosmetology industries<\/b>\u00a0is the use of\u00a0secondary paper packaging<\/b>. Although the use of this type of packaging is already widespread in the food and beverage industry, its functionality makes it ideal for pharmaceutical and cosmeticproducts<\/b>.
\nIn particular, paper packaging has the following\u00a0characteristics<\/b>:
\n–\u00a0It is resistant and light, thus maintaining the products in perfect condition during transportation and storage<\/b>. This is particularly\u00a0important\u00a0given the growing popularity of e-commerce worldwide.
\n– Its size and shape is easily adjustable (customization) covering all market needs<\/b>\u00a0and it can be\u00a0decorated with high quality graphics<\/b>, thus constituting an\u00a0effective marketing tool<\/b>\u00a0for bran
\n<\/p>\n

\n– It is able to\u00a0incorporate innovative features that entertain or inform the potential buyer or it can include properties that inform the supplier\u00a0<\/b>about the course and\u00a0<\/b>place<\/b>\u00a0of the product along the supply chain, or certify its authenticity<\/b>. For instance,\u00a0QR codes or radio frequency identification technology (RFID) tags<\/b>\u00a0can be placed on the paper packaging, thus enabling consumers and suppliers to read it, using mobile devices.\u00a0<\/b>
\n–\u00a0<\/b>Paper\u00a0<\/b>is environmentally friendly as it is made of renewable raw materials and it can be recycled and reused<\/b>. A\u00a0significant trend<\/b>in\u00a0the\u00a0packaging\u00a0industry is the\u00a0use of fewer and more durable materials for the reduction of the packaging weight which also leads to<\/b>\u00a0lower costs of production, transport and storage<\/b>. Consequently, this type of packaging material\u00a0improves the companies\u2019 ecological footprint<\/b>, which is particularly important when considering that\u00a0consumers are more sensitive to ecological issues and that firms are increasingly trying to become \u201cgreener\u201d.<\/b>\n<\/div>\n
\nPaper packaging is very popular in North America and especially in the US<\/b>, where, according to a report (American Alliance Paper Secondary Packaging-CPA, 2010) approximately\u00a090% of the products transported in the country are placed in secondary paper packaging<\/b>. It is\u00a0followed by the Asia-Pacific region, with China being the biggest market and the most important production center of corrugated paper packaging<\/b>. The rise in demand for such packaging in China is mainly due to the development of food, beverage health and personal care industries which constitute the largest end users in the region.\u00a0Other important markets are India, Japan and Indonesia. Similarly in Europe, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Poland are the largest markets for this type of packaging, while other significant markets in the rest of the world are Turkey and Brazil.<\/b>
\nThe\u00a0sectors that mostly use secondary paper packaging are food and beverages<\/b>\u00a0as well as\u00a0the retail channel (online and brick and mortar),<\/b>\u00a0since in this way\u00a0the product is kept safe during transportation and storage<\/b>\u00a0and can be easily placed on supermarket shelves. In addition, paper packaging contributes to the\u00a0effective promotion and differentiation of the brand<\/b>. Understandably, this successful\u00a0approach<\/b>\u00a0seems to be\u00a0adopted also by the industries of medical and cosmetic products<\/b>.
\nA typical example is the\u00a0paper packaging that incorporates a thermal isolation chamber system composed of interconnected vacuum insulation panels\u00a0<\/b>that isolate the payload from temperature excursion with a tight, protective thermal seal for a pre-determined temperature range and duration. As a result,\u00a0the need for hot or cold pockets or for ice, dry ice, or gel packs within the corrugated shipper is eliminated<\/b>. The packaging may be\u00a0adjusted to maintain the medication at room temperature (15-25 \u00b0 C) or refrigerated (2-8 \u00b0 C) even at freezer temperatures and it is fully recyclable<\/b>. This packaging\u00a0 was\u00a0developed by an American packaging manufacturing company for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries\u00a0<\/b>to meet its customers\u2019\u00a0(doctors, hospitals, health centers) needs, since those regularly prefer\u00a0temperature controlled packaging for the delivery of medicines<\/b>\u00a0as well as for clinical trial shipment.<\/p>\n
Another interesting case is the\u00a0resistant, secondary, corrugated paper packaging which incorporates\u00a0<\/b>on the one hand\u00a0a wooden<\/b>ramp<\/b>\u00a0to\u00a0ease loading and\u00a0<\/b>on the other hand\u00a0polyethylene padding (PE)\u00a0<\/b>which helps\u00a0<\/b>maintaining a distance between the device and the corrugated\u00a0board,\u00a0thus eliminating the possibility of frictions during transport<\/b>. This ecological packaging was\u00a0created by a<\/b>Mexican packaging company<\/b>, as a\u00a0more efficient and convenient solution for the transportation of medical equipment<\/b>\u00a0instead of the classic wooden secondary packaging that entails higher production transport and storage costs.<\/div>\n

Furthermore,\u00a0a particularly innovative solution is the square, paper, eco-friendly packaging which incorporates internally 100%\u00a0<\/b>pure, clean wool, which has the ability to maintain drugs (such as vaccines) at an optimal temperature between 2-8 \u2070C during transportation across the globe<\/b>. Furthermore, this package\u00a0is 25% smaller, 50% lighter and 25% more spacious than conventional boxes containing synthetic insulation<\/b>. This packaging was\u00a0manufactured by an English packaging company aiming at providing\u00a0<\/b>the medical industry with\u00a0an ecological and efficient solution for sensitive medical products<\/b>.
\nAn additional illustrative and innovative example is the\u00a0corrugated cardboard rectangular box which is 100% recyclable and\u00a0incorporates internally adhesive tape to hold the items firmly in the center of the box<\/b>. It facilitates the packaging of the products and\u00a0protects<\/b>\u00a0them\u00a0from damages during transportation and delivery<\/b>. It can be also\u00a0transported and stacked easily due to its lightweight<\/b>. Moreover, it\u00a0incorporates an opening film on the outer surface that ensures security and tamper evidence<\/b>. The packaging can be also\u00a0decorated with graphic designs both internally and externally<\/b>, enhancing the image of the brand, thus contributing to the development of emotional ties with the end users. This solution wasused by a British brand of natural, organic skincare products to support its e-retail offer<\/b>, aiming at offering a pleasant shopping experience and at promoting the company\u2019s values.
\nAll in all, the use of\u00a0secondary paper packaging<\/b>\u00a0does not constitute an exclusive privilege of the food and beverage sectors<\/b>.\u00a0The health care and cosmetics industries seem to increasingly explore this solution, as it meets the needs and requirements of both the buyers and distribution channels for eco-friendly, easy to use, lightweight and durable packaging that keep products safe and intact along the supply chain.<\/b>
